Today I share a few ‘what if’ questions to help us reframe and reimagine the near future of education.
This week I spent three days in Casey Fields Primary School collaborating with teachers. My experience of the educational challenges I witnessed has influenced some of the ideas in this issue.
What if schools were better equipped to handle complexity?
Learning for one student is complex. We must consider many aspects of their story and how they interact with their environment.
Teachers are expected to know so much about each student that they can effectively plan and cater to their individual needs.
Multiply this by the number of students in a class, grade or cohort, and you can see how overwhelming it is for teachers to meet everyone’s needs.
It is baffling to think how any teacher can adapt, cater and design for the complex needs of many students. And yet, this is what we expect of them.
