If You Heard This In Your Workshop, What Would You Do Next?
We don’t often hear about challenging workshop moments like this one. But it is in these situations where we learn the most.
If you are a workshop leader or facilitator what would you do?
Once, a workshop participant turned to the whole room and said, “Why are we doing this HR crap!”
It was a moment that presented a choice for me.
I had just established the working norms and session protocols. The comment was unkind and attempted to undermine the validity of our work right at the start of the workshop. (which had nothing to do with HR)
What would you do?
- Ignore it and push on.
- Speak to the person at the next available break.
- Call the person out.
- Make a general comment to the whole room, reinforcing the session purpose.
Setting the expectations for your workshop and starting the session thoughtfully and intentionally is vital. Holding participants to those expectations is essential.
The standard you walk past is the standard you accept
This powerful idea always resonates with me and guided my response.
